Exploring Northumberland
Within 20 minutes drive of both Wooler, gateway to the Cheviot Hills, and the historic coastal town of Berwick-upon-Tweed Tillmouth is an ideal base to explore the North of Northumberland.
The dramatic and empty beaches of Northumberland are also a short drive away at Scremerston and Cheswick.
A little further down the coast are the holy island of Lindisfarne, Bamburgh Castle, and the bird sanctuary at the Farne Islands.
Nearer to home drive 5 minutes down to nearby Coldstream and cross the Tweed to explore the Scottish Border.
On the English side explore the historic battlefield at Flodden, and the picturesque villages of Ford and Etal and Norham and their castles.
The area boats a wide variety of places to eat and drink, with many fine pubs and restaurants within driving distance. Alternatively take a stroll down to the Tillmouth Park Hotel pub and restaurant, AA 3 star with 1 rosette for cuisine.
The area also specialises in catering for the more active tourist:
- Fishing - the Till and the Tweed are world renowned salmon rivers.
- Cycling - easy access to many cycleways including Coasts and Castles and the Pennine Cycleway, or head off-road onto downhill trails in the Borders.
- Climbing - numerous nearby crags and boulders at Kyloe and Berryhill.
- Canoe - float down the Tweed or kayak out to sea.
- Walking - there a range of beautiful walks from your door or scenic hill walks on the Cheviot or Bowden.
